Welcome to the world of the custom-made tile of Artifacts By Design.  I create visually stunning one-of-a-kind tile designs of unrivaled quality.  Everything I do in the studio revolves around my relationships with clients, a savvy eye for design and a meticulous attention to detail.  When a project comes together, the results take your breath away.

My mission is to find images that are special to clients and to integrate them in the tiles that surround them.  I have employed this approach in our own home that is filled with evocative tiles that depict times of joy in our lives.  The historic white oak near our first home, the path we walked during our first date and our favorite retreat in the Rockies have prominent places in our kitchen.  More than selecting tiles from a catalog, I seek to engage in a collaborative design process that creates intimate tiles that will only be seen in your home. 

With a background in engineering, I appreciate issues related to architecture and process.  Time at the drafting table leads to well planned and coherent designs where everything fits together.  Practical issues related to layout, scale and installation are anticipated before the clay even comes out of the bag.  Attention to detail consumes me.  Every space and sightline is considered.  Even my glazes are created specifically for the requirements of each individual project.

Part of the fun of making custom tiles is that each job can be so different.  I make hand-carved molds to create one hundred bas-relief tiles for one project and then produce a single delicate etching for the next.  I produce what seems like miles of custom-made architectural moldings that cover every horizontal surface in the studio and then clear the decks to turn out tiny field tiles are each smaller than a dime.  I love a challenge and feel the greatest joy when a complex thought becomes tangible set of tiles.
